Introduction

In Taiwan, Ministry of Education has built the Guidelines for Beverage Sales in Schools which is all published in a handbook as an instruction to limit beverages selling in schools. Besides schools, beverages are sold everywhere in shops, groceries, supermarkets in Taiwan community. In order to give teachers, parents and children an idea how to choose healthier beverages and to drink adequately, we establish a beverage classification system which is base on Guidelines for Beverage Sales in Schools (by Ministry of Education).

Background

  1. Daily ice-cold beverage intake for schoolchild is 7.1% (144 kcal) of total calories in average. Girls who live in mountain district and the east of Taiwan get calories from ice cold  drink more than 10% of total energy.
  2. Upper grade of elementary school students drink cold beverages twice than adults. Total energy is gradually provided by ice cold beverage since 8 age,  and dairy intake is getting down at the same time.
