Potato Chips Sampling Investigation (April 2000)

      In recent years, the leisure food has been developed quickly. However, most people do not understand that the leisure food means empty calories food. The food industries use many kinds of promotions such as complimentary gifts and toys in order to attract children and teenagers. The leisure food is also connected with image of “high class and high quality life”. Therefore, the sales volume of leisure food is growing fast these years. According to Taiwan Integrated Consumer Tendency (ICT), potato chips is one of leisure foods that Taiwanese select and purchase most often. However, potato chips have more than 50% of total calories that are from fat, and these fats are added during food processing.

Ingredient explanation

  1. Potato chips 50grams = 280kcal = 1 bowl of rice.
  2. There is 57.4% calories from fat in potato chips.
  3. The average of 100 grams potato chips has extra added fat 35 grams (7 teaspoons).

The daily recommended intake of fat is 55.5 grams. However, if you consume 100 grams of potato chips, the amount of fat intake will already reach 54.6%~71.4% of the recommended daily value of fat (the average is 64.1%).
